“We Said Goodbye” video

July 22 2025  Seeing AI versions of yourself and your significant other is pretty cool! Eli Lev did a great job creating this evocative video that's filled with captivating imagery. Watch it in the “Video” section below.
"We Said Goodbye" is a unique song which, as of November 2025, has received over 50,000 plays on Spotify. Whether you watch the video or listen to it in the “Music” section, we recommend earbuds, headphones, or real speakers … phone and tablet speakers don't cut it!

The evolution 9 public debut

Mar 17 2025  evolution 9 performed on Sunday, March 16 at the Godfrey Daniels open mic event (godfreydaniels.org), playing three original songs: “Madison Jane”, “Let Me Be”, and “Who Will You Love”. Musicians love playing there because it’s a listening room where people pay attention.

“Let Me Be” gets 2025 off to a good start!

Jan 3 2025  If you already miss the holiday season and need more New Year cheer, we're here to help! Just listen to Hub Willson’s lively "Let Me Be" here (in “Music” below) or on Spotify or other streaming service. Besides Hub on vocals, keys, drums, and percussion, the song features Pete Smoyer on guitar and bass, and Dave singing a harmony vocal after helping with the brass arrangement. Bob Giovannetti, as always, did a fine job of mixing and mastering at Crystal Pig Studio. If you’ve got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell, this fun toe-tapper tune is for you!

Fun fact: As of 2024, evolution 9 songs on Spotify have had over 60,000 streams and more than 20,000 listeners from 126 countries. (Not exactly Taylor Swift numbers, but not bad!)

Husband-and-wife vocals on “We Said Goodbye”

Oct 5 2024  Dave here. It’s unusual for a song to be released a half century after it was written, but that’s true of “We Said Goodbye“. I composed the initial version (partly inspired by Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier” opener) in the mid-1970s during my college years as a music and English major, and have made minor musical changes and major improvements to the lyrics over the many years since. It was worth the wait in order to use modern recording technology and to work with a talented recording engineer like Bob Giovannetti, who is a keyboardist like me. Bob also programmed the drums and percussion.
I’m not sure how to categorize this song: Prog ballad? Neo-baroque? But unless I’m divinely inspired in the time I have left, I don’t think I’ll come up with anything better. And to have my wife Zehra making her evolution 9 debut singing harmony makes it even more special!

Listen in “Music” below, or on Spotify (where this song has been played over 66,000 times as of January 2026) or Apple Music. And watch the wonderful AI-assisted video created by Eli Lev in the “Video” section!

“Tell Me Something” and “Time Remaining”

Apr 30 2023  Dave wrote “Tell Me Something” in 1985 and recorded a demo with The Reporters four years later. And that would’ve been the end of it, but the song kept popping into his head for decades afterward. Deciding this was one of his best songs, he recorded a new version with help from Reporters guitarist Rob Ballonoff (who played brilliantly on this catchy pop-rocker), drummer extraordinaire Jonathan Lamson, and evolution 9 members Greg Geist and Hub Willson on harmonies. The bass (played by another ex-Reporter, Tony Almazan) and some of the keyboards are from the 1989 recording, making this a trans-millennium mix. Fans of 80s pop-rock will likely enjoy this song.

A glowing review from A&R Factory said in part: “Consider the latest single, Tell Me Something, from Evolution 9 as an unmissable sonic event. The unbridled synthesis of sound and emotion resonates with exhilaratingly rare depth. The rock-amplified synth-pop hit, which shares the same rhythmically cosmic air as Inspiral Carpets will envelop you in a kaleidoscope of colour as it vibrantly moves through its meticulously carved progressions.”

The soothing instrumental "Time Remaining" was also composed a while ago (around 1979), but the new arrangement is more elaborate than the original demo, and its serenity is a major shift from the energy level of the song preceding it.

 "Gone But Never Far"

Feb 11 2023  After local multi-instrumentalist Russ Rentler posted a video of himself playing a short original composition on a Weissenborn guitar, Dave wrote a melody and lyrics for it, then added keys and vocals at his home studio.

“Gone But Never Far”, which has gotten over 16,000 streams on Spotify, will speak to anyone who has grieved the loss of a companion or friend but is still hopeful. It’s available here and on most streaming platforms.

Hub's "Someday" is now!

Dec 16 2022  Hub Willson heard a melody as he awoke late at night, and wrote lyrics for it. Next day, he added a reggae beat and took it from there. “Someday” charmingly expresses a universal positive message amid turbulent times.

Joining us were Pete Smoyer on guitars and Jim McGee on bass.

Musical friends of evolution 9

It's time to introduce three gifted local musicians who have recently played major roles in recording some of our music.

Pete Smoyer played the guitars on "Lorelei" and "Someday", and quite well, we think! Along with Hub, Pete was a member of the Limits, a popular local band that played original 60s British style pop-rock. In addition to playing guitar, Pete was a songwriter for the Limits along with Rick Levy and Hub. Pete also owned the equipment and was the recording engineer at the studio where most of the Limits songs were recorded.

Jim McGee is a renowned bassist, audio engineer, and owner of SpectraSound Recording in Quakertown, where he played bass on "Someday" and mixed the song. One of Jim's clients said, "Whether in sessions, mixing or mastering, Jim McGee brings a musician’s sensibility to the craft of sound engineering." Jim also leads the jazz group New Kind of Talk, who recently performed at Miller Symphony Hall's Rodale Room.

Russ Rentler is a retired doctor who now has more time for music. The prestigious "Sing Out!" folk music magazine called Russ "a gifted songwriter and fine musician." Russ plays all types of acoustic string instruments, including guitar, mandolin, ukulele, banjo, fiddle, viola, autoharp, hammered and mountain dulcimer, dobro, and bouzouki. He also builds and restores them. Russ's video of his original composition, performed on a Weissenborn guitar, inspired a new song by evolution 9 which will be released on February 11.

"Someday" is now!

Here's a 2022 year-end update from evolution 9 ...

Hub Willson’s reggae-flavored "Someday" was released last Friday. "Someday" tunefully conveys a universal positive message that’s appropriate for the holiday season. Hub also designed the cover image. Besides Hub on lead and harmony vocals, keyboards, and percussion, “Someday” features Pete Smoyer on guitar, Jim McGee on bass, and Dave Follweiler on harmonies. Give it a listen at https://evol9.com or any major streaming platform.

Greg Geist's "Madison Jane" has generated over 2,000 Spotify streams so far. He won’t be able to retire on that income, but this was a stronger debut than most.

Dave Follweiler is planning to re-record a pop-rock tune he wrote in the mid-1980s which he thinks deserves a proper recording, so look for it in 2023.

Thank you for following evolution 9!

And then there were three ... evolution 9 welcomes Hub Willson!

We’re happy to announce that evolution 9 has a new member, none other than the Lehigh Valley’s Renaissance man, Hub Willson! Hub is an acclaimed photographer, landscape painter, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who has been a member of many popular Lehigh Valley bands including the Shillings, the Limits, Tikit, and Steppin’ Out. In addition to Greg’s “Madison Jane”, we’ll be releasing Hub’s Sixties-style pop gem “Lorelei”, which he describes as what the fictional Oneders' next hit might’ve sounded like if they’d had more than one (in the wonderful movie “That Thing You Do!”). With Greg contributing additional harmony vocals, this will be the first e9 track to include all three members, along with talented Limits veteran Peter Smoyer on guitar. Also on the way is “The Only One”, a poignant ballad composed and performed by Hub and Dave in their first songwriting collaboration.

Like our earlier releases, these songs were mixed by Bob Giovannetti at Crystal Pig Recording Studio, and we think they sound great!
In the tradition of the vinyl 45 RPM record that contains two songs, “Lorelei” and “The Only One” will be released together as a single (with the lovely Jess Kanas gracing the cover image), and both will be available along with “Madison Jane” on Friday, September 30 on evol9.com and all major streaming platforms.

New evolution 9 music on the way for fall 2022

It’s been a while, but some new music by evolution 9 will be released soon!

Greg Geist will make his evolution 9 songwriting debut with “Madison Jane”, a song written over 20 years ago. Greg played all the non-keyboard instruments (mandolin, acoustic guitar, bass, and drums) and handled all the vocals, while Dave Follweiler contributed some tasty keyboard parts that help elevate the song to its newly recorded form. Mixed by Bob Giovannetti, the song was initially described as “Americana”, but you can decide for yourself what type of song it is while you hum it in your head after hearing it. “Madison Jane” will be available Friday, September 30 on this website and all major streaming platforms including Amazon Music, Apple Music, iHeart Radio, iTunes, Pandora, Spotify, and YouTube Music.

But wait, there’s more! We will have another major announcement coming shortly, so watch for it!

Welcome to the evolution 9 website!

Thanks for visiting evolution 9!

We weren’t originally planning to launch with a ballad, but our debut single "Who Will You Love" came out so well that we just couldn’t wait for the uptempo tunes to be finished.

In the Music section of this website, you can download the song to an MP3 file that you can add to your music library.

If you use iTunes and would like to add "Who Will You Love" directly to iTunes instead of downloading an MP3 file, go to https://music.apple.com/us/album/who-will-you-love-single/1565978721 and click on "Also available in the iTunes store", and you'll have the option to hear and buy the song in iTunes.

Let's keep evolving, shall we?
